Bone marrow transplantation (also known as stem cell transplantation) is a medical procedure used to treat diseases such as Thalassemia, Aplastic Anemia and cancers of the blood, once thought incurable.
It involves harvsting healthy stem cells from the donor to replace or replenish the diseased bone marrow of the patient. The new stem cells take over the production of new healthy blood cells.
BMT includes transplantation of multi potent hematopoietic stem cells (usually derived from bone marrow), peripheral blood stem cells, or umbilical cord blood from donor to recipient.
Stem cell transplant is a curative treatment for various diseases:
a) Related donor
b) Unrelated donor
c) Heplotransplant
Anybody who is less than 75 years of age with normal organ function can be a Donor for stem cell transplant. Donor should not have any active transfusion transmitted viral infections or active malignancy.
